Online nursing school can seem expensive, even if you start at a community college, earn your ASN, and go from there. The cost for actual nursing credit hours is not higher than other types of programs, the supplementary items necessary are what drive up the price.

Online nursing school involves much more than simply sitting through electronic lectures and subsequently taking exams. Nursing students rotate through various types of clinicals in different types of facilities. Because nursing students work with actual patients in real-life settings, it is necessary for the nursing school to insure the student nurses against accidents and mistakes. This cost is included in tuition.

Also included in tuition are lab fees. Online nursing school students participate in one or two lab sessions a week to learn the practical skills necessary in nursing. Nursing students must show proficiency at tasks like giving shots, starting IVs, hanging IVs, drawing blood and providing any manner of care in mock situations before they are allowed to gain experience practicing on real people.

Materials necessary for online nursing schools are going to include many books. In addition to required literature, there are often options listed for supplementary reading material. In general, it behooves the student to take advantage of as much information available as possible. Supplementary materials such as medical dictionaries and drug reference books remain useful long after school has ended, and can be viewed as investments into your nursing career.

Also necessary are uniforms required for clinical rotations. As students in outside facilities are representative of the school itself, online nursing schools tend to be extremely strict about what is to be worn when students are working in public. It is not unheard of for schools to specify exactly what is and is not acceptable, right down to a student's shoelaces. Be prepared to spend money on a uniform, and to spend money on more than one uniform if you do not want to be doing laundry every day after clinicals end.

Online nursing programs are similar to most other programs in that cost goes up along with the supposed prestige of the nursing school. It is important to know that you do not have to attend the most expensive nursing school to be assured of receiving the best nursing education. No matter where they go to school or what kind of degree they receive, all RNs must pass the same exam.
